BBQ Baked Tofu

If you’re looking for an easy way to make tofu more exciting, this BBQ baked tofu is a great place to start.
The tofu is coated in a smoky barbecue seasoning, baked until golden and slightly crispy, and finished with your favorite BBQ sauce. The result is flavorful, hearty and incredibly versatile. It works just as well for a quick weeknight dinner as it does for meal prep.
One of my favorite things about baked tofu is that the oven does most of the work. There’s no standing over the stove, and the tofu develops crispy edges while staying tender in the middle. Brushing on the BBQ sauce towards the end creates a sticky glaze without burning the sauce.
Why You’ll Love This BBQ Baked Tofu
This recipe is simple, reliable and easy to customize. It uses everyday ingredients and doesn’t require any special equipment. Once you’ve mastered the basic method, you can easily change the seasoning or sauce depending on what you’re in the mood for.
It’s also a great meal prep recipe. Bake a batch at the beginning of the week and use it in different meals over the next few days. The tofu keeps well in the fridge and is just as delicious reheated.
Tips for Crispy Tofu
For the best texture, use extra-firm tofu or press your tofu well before seasoning. Removing excess moisture helps the tofu absorb more flavor and allows it to crisp up nicely in the oven.
Try not to overcrowd the baking tray. Leaving a little space between the pieces helps hot air circulate, giving the tofu golden edges instead of steaming it.
Finally, add the BBQ sauce at the end, when the tofu has already firmed up after being baked for 20 minutes. This creates a sticky glaze while preventing the sugars in the sauce from burning.
Serving Suggestions
BBQ baked tofu is incredibly versatile and works in all kinds of meals:
- Serve it in grain bowls with rice and roasted vegetables,
- add it to salads for extra protein
- or tuck it into wraps and sandwiches.
- It also pairs well with baked potatoes,
- corn on the cob
- or a fresh coleslaw for an easy summer-inspired meal.
Leftovers are perfect for lunch the next day and can be reheated in the oven, air fryer or a skillet until warm and slightly crispy again.
Can I make this in the air fryer?
Yes! Air fry the tofu until crispy, then toss it with the BBQ sauce during the last few minutes of cooking. Note that it won’t take as long in the air fryer, so be sure to check your tofu frequently.
Do I have to press the tofu?
That depends on what tofu you’re using. There are many different consistencies. If yours is on the watery side, pressing helps because the tofu will better soak up the marinade. That being said, I have never pressed my tofu as the one I buy is pretty firm to begin with.
Which tofu works best?
Extra-firm tofu gives this BBQ baked tofu the best texture for baking.
Can I make it ahead?
Absolutely. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and reheat in the oven, air fryer or a skillet.
Can I freeze baked tofu?
Yes. Freeze it in an airtight container and reheat directly from frozen for best results.
